Le Corbusier. Les Quartiers Modernes Fruges / The Quartiers Modernes Fruges

in 1923/24 Henry Fruges, a Bordeaux industrialist commissioned Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret with a “small workers housing estate” in Lege and a garden city in Pessac, comprising 130 to 150 houses with shops. These two housing schemes fitted neatly into the architects research on standardisation and the “machine a habiter”, and provided a useful laboratory for gauging public opinion with regard to mass-production techniques in housing estates. One of the most striking features of the Cite Fruges was the use of polychromy on the exterior facades, to, in Le Corbusier’s own words, “sculpt the space through the physical quality of colour - bring forward some volumes while making others recede.

Le Corbusier. The Chapel at Ronchamp

Legorreta

Although LEGORRETA Architecture has been often labeled a high modernist, its buildings are rooted in the traditional architecture of its native Mexico. Best known for geometric and planar buildings with stucco walls, painted in reds and coppers, yellows, purples, and blues, the classic Mexican house plan is a recurrent theme in LEGORRETA’s oeuvre, with courtyards, water features, and arcades playing a prominent role.

Ricardo Legorreta, who shared Luis Barragan’s search for a contemporary Mexican architecture, founded the firm in 1965 and was joined in the early 1990s by his son Victor, when the firm became Legorreta + Legorreta. The Mexico City-based firm, formed by more than seventy people, is currently working on projects both in Mexico and abroad. Louis I.Kahn: Complete Work 1935-1974

This book owes its concept to the transparency of the work process of Louis I. Kahn, whose ideas are preserved in the wealth of sketches he did whenever developing new concepts or working out details for new building projects. Sketches and plans of different developmental stages of his projects are laid out in a basically chronological order and these are complemented by relevant extracts from his writings and speeches and by his commentary while this documentation was being prepared in 1973 – the year before his death.

As in the first edition, the authors aim has not been to interpret or evaluate. Rather, they wish to provide the scholar with a solid base for further research, allowing him to follow the traces of a remarkably creative mind that revered architecture as a manifestation of man as spirit.

Moshe Safdie (Volume 1)

Moshe Safdie’s architecture displays a richly evolving tectonic and spatial sensibility. During forty years of practice, Safdie has designed cultural, educational, and civic institutions, housing, mixed-use complexes and airports, and has developed designs for existing urban districts and entirely new cities. The year was 1978, and Quinnipiac College was forming a new campus in Hamden, Connecticut. Chance would bring the author and the place together, and for the next forty years Jefferson B. Riley, FAIA, one of the founding partners of Centerbrook Architects and Planners, would be Quinnipiac’s architect designing over a hundred renovations, additions, and new buildings on three separate campuses that now comprise Quinnipiac University. Brinda Somaya: Works and Continuities

This volume is a comprehensive monograph chronicling the personal and professional journey of the Indian architect and urban conservationist Brinda Somaya, from 1975 to the present. Innovations in Design Ahmedabad Bus Rapid Transit System

Over the last decade in India, many cities have undertaken pathbreaking initiatives in resolving issues associated with urban transport, and, specifically, mass transit system. The Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) is now acknowledged as a key mode to help large-scale mobility of people. Today, eighteen cities in the country are at different stages of planning, design, execution and operation in their BRTS journey. Since the BRTS concept was new to India a decade ago, cities experimented in various ways with varying degrees of success. The Janmarg, as the BRTS is known in Ahmedabad, also explored many options before choosing its design approach. It was flexible in changing design elements even during the implementation stage. Every element was discussed, debated, and experimented with before a final decision. Many of these experiments led to innovations and best practices. Since its inauguration in October 2009, Janmarg has been accepted as the first complete BRTS in India.

This book traces the design journey of Janmarg, the alternatives that were considered, the rationale underlying the choices made, the innovations it fostered and lessons for the futurefor Ahmedabad and for other cities. Paths Uncharted: Balkrishna Doshi

Recounts the extraordinary life and achievements of the architect BV Doshi from lifelong notes and diaries kept by him -Features several of his own drawings Dr Balkrishna Doshi is foremost among the modern Indian architects. An urban planner and educator for the past seventy years, Dr Doshi is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects and a Fellow of the Indian Institute of Architects. After initial studies at the JJ School of Architecture, Bombay, Doshi worked for four years with Le Corbusier in Paris as Senior Designer (1951-54) and four years in India to supervise his projects in Ahmedabad. Doshi’s office Vastu-Shilpa (Environmental Design) was established in 1955. Doshi has to his credit outstanding projects ranging from dozens of townships and several educational campuses, including those for CEPT University, Ahmedabad, NIFT, New Delhi, and IIM Bangalore. Apart from his international fame as an architect, Doshi is equally known as an educator and institution builder.

He has been the first Founder-Director of School of Architecture (1962-72) and School of Planning (1972-79), Ahmedabad, which are regarded as the pioneer and fountainhead of modern architectural and planning education in India. His distinguished professional career is more than matched by his academic achievements, and Doshi has held important chairs at American universities. In recognition of his distinguished contribution as a professional and as an academician, Dr Doshi has received several international and national awards and honors and himself has been on the jury for several international and national competitions. This autobiography captures Doshi’s career from his childhood to his studies in Bombay and London, his work at Atelier Le Corbusier in Paris and collaboration with Louis I Kahn for IIM Ahmedabad. It recounts his meetings with the most remarkable people in his own and allied fields, and his equally remarkable patrons, who include the likes of Dr Vikram Sarabhai, Sheth Kasturbhai Lalbhai, and the story of his own family.

Doshi’s life - from the time he was born into a modest family in the by-lanes of Pune, and his struggles and tenacity to excel in his chosen fields - is a fascinating and inspiring story. Piero and Gloria Cicionesi

The Auroville Architects Monograph Series documents the pioneering work of the architects whose vision shaped Auroville, a unique international township in southeastern India. This monograph, the second in the series, is a comprehensive record of the work of Piero and Gloria Cicionesi, whose architectural legacy translates Auroville’s philosophy of community living into built form. In 1968, plunged upon arrival into designing buildings on a barren red plateau, their deep engagement with the philosophy of Auroville resulted in the construction of several communal living spaces, with a spatial sense that is simple, modern and timeless. The Matrimandir, the spiritual heart of Auroville, was built and executed by Piero. Completed in 1992, it shows his mathematical genius and his sense of perfection and material detailing, sharpened in the democratic, collective milieu of Auroville. Gloria’s projects such as the residential and community living spaces she designed, display her concerns about the comfort and security of an ageing population, as well as her willingness to experiment with newer, more sustainable materials.

Poppo Pingel

Poppo Pingel (b. 1942) in Westphalia, Germany, has been working and living in Auroville, South India, since 1970. This unique International Township founded in 1968 based on the Integral Yoga of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother is a source of inspiration to many architects around the world. This first major monograph of Poppo’s work spans his career till date, the influences that formed him and continue to do so, and his contribution to Auroville. Highly personal in his approach, his architecture challenges the senses with its rustic quality while responding to the climate, landscape and culture of the place. Rethinking Conservation Lime Mortar: A Traditional Building Craft

Prior to the invention of cement, lime mortar was the predominant building material for the monumental buidings in India. Use of lime mortar in conservation works is essential as it is the original building material and, if well prepared, lime mortar survives for centuries as it returns to its natural state of limestone. The volume relays the knowledge accumulated through training workshops - attended by conservation professionals from across India - to engineers, conservation professionals, and architects in an illustrated manner. Snehal Shah Architect

Snehal Shah believes in making architecture that is ‘of its time’, as a Gujarati proverb states, vakhat tevu vaju. History confirms that buildings appropriate to their time, place and climate, endure. In learning to build, his architecture adopted a variety of expressions -- with the constant being the will to manipulate light and ventilation to the best advantage. He studies vernacular techniques as well as learns from wider Indian exemplars and also Western architectural history. References from all these find their way into his buildings, along with his debt to the geometry ofLouis Kahn and Mario Botta. In this book, Shah exhibits the work of 25 years in practice. He describes his concerns and development as an architect in parallel with the emergence of India onto the world stage as a mighty, populace, modern nation rich in contradictions.

Snehal Shah studied at CEPTUniversity, Ahmedabad, graduating in 1980. Earning his masters degree from the Architectural Association Graduate School in London, he returned to India in 1987 and began practice in Ahmedabad.

Stone Craftsmanship: Conservation and Possibilities

Over a hundred stone craftsmen have worked for over three years on the Humayun’s Tomb conservation project. They have used the same tools and techniques that would have been used by craftsmen who built the Tomb in the 16th century. Though sandstone craft skills survive in India, the building craft sector has not received the attention that has been paid to the handicraft sector though more people can find employment in the building sector industry.
